INVERNESS, Marin County — October 31, 2026. A long-running special flood control district serving part of Inverness has been dissolved, with its remaining funds redirected to local creek stabilization work. On May 5, 2026, Marin County’s Flood Control and Water Conservation District Board approved dissolution of Flood Control Zone No. 10 and the transfer of approximately $33,565 to the Marin Resource Conservation District.
Why did the county end the zone?
The district was established after severe 1982 flooding damaged creek banks and deposited sediment in the area. Many of the original stabilization projects were completed over the following decades. County officials concluded the remaining revenue and limited capacity would not support a meaningful ongoing flood-control program.
The district covered about 6.48 square miles including Inverness and creeks draining toward Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Tomales Bay. County statements explain that the zone did not maintain physical facilities, and that dissolving it was not expected to reduce an existing county service.
Where will the money go?
Marin’s District 4 report on the May 5 decision says the transfer supports streambank stabilization through the Marin Resource Conservation District. The goal is to limit erosion and sediment accumulation in locally relevant creek corridors. An allocation is not the same thing as proof that a specified bank project has already been constructed.
Does this eliminate flood hazards?
No. Flooding, drainage and sediment remain concerns in a wooded coastal watershed, especially during heavy winter rainfall. Residents should consult current emergency warnings and roadway status. The county’s original April 7 explanation provides the historical financial background and rationale.
